Keeping details to a minimum for now, since the claims process is currently pending.

Just got sideswiped in the Mustang, by somebody trying to pass on the shoulder. No one was hurt. An officer showed up to collect our information, but our stories apparently didn’t match, and I wasn’t familiar enough with my dashcam to figure out how to play back footage on-the-spot for him.

Man, how did people ever get by without side mirrors? Driving like this SUCKS.

Having an inkling what it takes to get a car declared totaled by insurance, where do you sit in terms of full ownership of said Mustang? Good enough place to buy it back under a salvage title? Damage isn’t that bad so don’t fret?

I specifically got dash cams in all of my cars because someone lied. Asshole backed into me in a parking lot, lied about it, and because “most of the time” it’s the person in the rear who ran into the person in front, their insurance refused to pay.

Shitty. Whenever I turn left on a single lane road, I move unreasonably over to the right. That way, there is no chance someone could pass me on the shoulder.

It’s mine, 100% . I can replace the bolt-on stuff easily , but I need more practice doing bodywork before I’d let myself fix the rest of it .

My experience is that you are better off going through your insurance, and letting them work it out with the other company. The other guy’s insurance has no incentive to do anything other than low- ball you.

I got mine after almost hitting a police car that turned left in front of me from a straight-only lane to my right with no siren or signal. I figured that had I hit him, it would have worked out very poorly for me without any evidence.

Fun fact: while I don’t imagine its the case here, there are roads here in MA where driving on the shoulder is explicitly allowed during rush hour. And in my experience, they tend to be actual shoulders, sometimes even with rumble strips, rather than a real lane that is just not always in service. It seems totally crazy to me.

Insurance money usually goes to the shop who can just fit new body panels. Hopefully you hit the sweet spot of payoff and damage you can fix beyond how far it goes.
